Kirigami, a technique that transforms 2D sheets into complex designable 3D sculptures, is often used in paper art. In article number 1906233, Yu-Chieh Cheng, Hao Zeng, and co-workers implement kirigami in light-responsive thin-film liquid-crystal network actuators. A versatile 3D shape-shifting and multigait rolling robot capable of light-steered 2D motion is demonstrated.

Modern Nanophotonics Lab
Augmented reality near-eye display
Industrial project from 2020/4/1-2024/9/31
Diffractive gratings, one of the most promising near-eye display designs, has been challenging to satisfy the essential features without making sacrifices in output efficiency or the direction of incidence due to low diffraction efficiency of higher modes at normal incidence.

FLAT NONLINEAR FOCUSING MIRROR WITHOUT OPTICAL AXES
Research project for Newly-recruited Personnel
A more advanced focusing mirror is to achieve a high-efficient frequency converter using nonlinear metasurface based on n-fold symmetric antennas. Such a nonlinear focusing mirror not only converts light frequencies in reflection but also focuses them at different positions, more efficiently than conventional bulky nonlinear crystals. Our thin, compact, light, portable device, not phase matching required, can avoid a complicated design, setup, and tweaking processes.
